From the beginning of the twentieth century, United States military individual load-carrying equipments were fabricated mainly of cotton duck and cotton webbing. Throughout the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Korean War, cotton-based load-carrying equipments served the infantryman with little change in their design and construction. In 1954 a new load-carrying system was developed to meet the needs of the infantryman on the perceived battlefields of the Cold War. At the onset of the Vietnam War it was clear that this new cotton-based webbing system was not acceptable for use in the humid environment of the jungles of Southeast Asia. The answer to the problems plaguing cotton load-carrying equipments came in the form of nylon. Nylon equipment was found to be more durable, lighter and dried quicker than the standardized cotton equipment. As the Vietnam War ground down nylon web equipment was proving to be the answer to other load-carrying problems that had arisen during the course of the war. In 1973 an all-nylon load-carrying equipment system was standardized replacing all cotton-based load-carrying equipments in service at the time. Since 1973 all load-carrying equipments have been fabricated utilizing nylon and, in effect, closed the history book on cotton-based equipments. In this book, C A Monroe and Craig Pickrall describe and illustrate the personal equipment of the US Army soldier throughout the period, and show how it has developed to meet changing operational needs.

Quick Read, Great Information...

Full disclosure, I am a gear junkie. If there is a book on web gear, I am on it! So I had to get "American Web Equipment 1967-1991." Having begun my Army service in the era of ALICE gear, I didn't think I would learn too much from this book. I am happy to say I was wrong, as there was a lot of information to be gained from "American Web Equipment 1967-1991." The author focuses on the development & improvement of web gear, so the reader can see how each 'generation' of web gear was an evolution of earlier equipment. I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and I recommend it.

Brings Back Memories

Fantastic book detailing the load carrying and sustainment equipment carried by the US Army from the Vietnam Era to post Desert Storm. I attended Field Artillery (13 Bravo) One Station Unit Training at Fort Sill, OK in 1991 and was (and still am) very familiar with much of this equipment. I retired from active duty in 2013 so I witnessed much of the evolution of CTA-50 that was issued over that time. I highly recommend this book.

"American Web Equipment 1967-1991", part of the Europa Militaria Series, is a short (64 page) handbook on the personal load bearing equipment used by the U.S. Army between Vietnam and Operation DESERT STORM. It is likely to appeal primarily to collectors of militaria who want to be able to identify and appreciate individual items of equipment, but it may also be of interest to students of the history of the U.S. Army. The book offers a short but detailed history of the transition during Vietnam from cotton duck-based webbing equipment to the more durable nylon-based individual load systems. The transition went through several experimental phases, but the end result was lighter and more durable equipment for fighting and existence loads. Towards the end of the period covered here, tactical load bearing vests made their appearance, a system that would come to full fruition during the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. The very readable text is enhanced by an extensive selection of photographs. Recommended to fans of militaria.

Well-written and interesting, but if you can, get the original

The book itself is great; it describes the mythology and history of each constellation, citing a number of sources and cultures. However, this copy, being the "classic reprint series", didn't do a great job of copying the original illustrations. If you can get an original copy for a similar price, you'll probably appreciate that more.

Absolutely No Problem.

I'm having difficulty sympathizing with other reviewers. This Hal Leonard publication doesn't pull any punches. It doesn't say it's a "kid version" or an "easy version" and there's even a sample of one of the songs in which you can clearly see that it is in Eb major which although not impossible, is a sure warning sign that other sharp and flat stuffed keys are on their way although the passage it shows is in comfortable first position. It delivers what it advertises: 7 selections for the violin and digital accompaniment (like Hal Leonard always does) with the same syncopation from the melodies that every kid and his mother have been belting out since whenever the film came out. It has a nicely authentic quality I craved in the 90's when aside from the occasional great arrangement, it was just dull dumbing down that didn't sound like anything, much less the tune I was trying to play. I just don't understand the low ratings of other users. It's as if it is thought that Hal Leonard intentionally decided to thwart a beginning violinist's chance at playing the signature Frozen tunes. When I first started out on the violin and the Disney/Broadway Musical/Studio Ghibli music I had was too hard, I practiced my butt off until I was able to play it. Having the pieces in the original key means you can play along with the dvd as well which would have been a dream come true when I was a kid. The only thing I was surprised about with this collection was rather than an included CD for demo and play along recordings, there is an online code from which you can download the files. I live in Japan and still there was no problem accessing the files. I'll have to burn my own CD but it is easy enough to transfer to an mp3 player or smartphone as is.
Here's a guide to which piece is in which so no one has any more surprises.

1.Do You Want to Build a Snowman? Eb Major Possible beginner difficulties: Gb on the E string and a high Eb above the staff at the end.

2. For the First Time in Forever F major-F# major-Eb major-G major PBD: The syncopated rhythm in the F major part unless you know the song, of course or have listened to the demo track. The F# part is a bit tricky for those not used to the E# and A#'s. However, the rhythmic part is all in first position (with one fourth finger stretch for the C#. When it reaches the slower main melody, it is in third position and the notes are all pretty reachable, just keep an eye out for the A# and the high D# and you'll be fine. The rest of the piece is pretty basic third position with a Db on the A string to a Gb on the E string at one point.

3.Love is an Open Door D major to E major. PBD: No real problems in the Dmajor part. The E major part is pretty playable up until the "dreaded 6th-7th position" parts which can [gasp!] just taken down an octave if they're that "impossible." It's (above the staff) E F# G# E is easily found as it is a harmonic (it helps that the note before is/can be an open E) with the 2nd finger (6th position) hitting the high G# with the 4th finger. E major is one of the most playable violinist's scales. It's right up there with the other Open String Scales.

4. Reindeer(s) are Better than People G major. Easy as pie save for C/C# above the staff at one point. Short too.

5.Let it Go Ab major PBD: Well, it's in Ab which means, boys and girls that there is a scary Db which, interestingly enough is barely ever used. It starts in comfortable First Position with only the Ab on the D string to worry about. It's not until 3/4's of the page down when it even gets into 3rd Position and the dreaded high Db is nestled close to the C right below it so, no problem. The high Eb C Bb ("Here I stand") melody can easily be taken down an octave if needed. In the second half of the second page, there's a seemingly crazy passage starting in eighth notes and then escalating into sixteenths which scary-looking notes like Cb and Fb. It can rewritten (or rethought, rather) as so:C# F# G# F# B A#G# F# E...B C which then repeats twice in sixteenths. Not so hard now I hope? After that is basically a syncopated scale Gb major which isn't easy but it is slow enough that with enough practice, can be done as it is all in First Position. After that is just a reprisal of the melody and you're set. You've played Let it Go.

6.Fixer Upper A major-C major PBD: It's pretty rhythmic but listening to the demo track a few times or watching the movie should solve that pretty quickly. There's a tricky sixteenth note triplet scale from E on the D string to A# on the E. I would slur it or just stay in third position. Third position in A major isn't much fun so jumping to First position and then doing the last notes of the scale in half position should do it. The Cmajor section consists of you just playing C a lot (above the staff) with occasional high D and a Bb thrown in for good measure.

7. In Summer E major -F major. All in First Position. PBD. Nothing to fear but eighth note triplets.

One of the best movie soundtrack violin books I have ever purchased!

I LOVE this book. I am always disappointed by movie music for violin since they are almost always over simplified and the backtracks are usually a disappointment.
However, this book AND the backtracks are exactly what I wanted! I also was pleasantly surprised that the pieces are in the same key as the original versions, making it possible to also play along with the karaoke tracks on the actual Frozen soundtrack whenever I feel so inclined.

This is not a beginner book and that is not the publisher's fault in any way so I don't understand the one star reviews. Nowhere on the cover does it say that the level is easy or that it is beginner level. To be fair, since it is movie music it is typically safe to assume that the music will be easy, but as it as the level is not explicitly stated either way, there is no false advertising here. While it would be nice if Hal Leonard could start printing the difficulty level on the cover of their books, a one star review for a well produced book seems somewhat uncalled for.

It is good to write reviews to inform other potential buyers that if they are looking for an easy book, this is not for them, but a one star review should be reserved for something that is of poor quality and this book most certainly does not fall into that category.

to what end does a healthy culture use philosophy?

The book's key concept would be "a unity of style." By this, Nietzsche seems to mean a power to have "life in lavish perfection before our eyes," a power wherein our desire for "freedom, beauty, and greatness" and our "drive toward truth" are one (p. 33). A culture is healthy when it has such unity of style. In such a culture, philosophy exists in its fullest right, being engaged fully by its members. When it is sick, philosphy is deemed dangerous and philosophers exiles. Or, as Nietzsche says: "During such times philosophy remains the learned monologue of the lonely stroller, the accidental loot of the individual, the secret skeleton in the closet, or the harmless chatter between senile academics and children" (p. 37).

How such unity can be achieved in a philosopher is illustrated by Niezsche in philosophers of 'young' Greece, that is, before Plato. So in Thales ("water is the origin of all things"), we see 1) urges of the religious in his wanting to settle the primal origin of everything, 2) a natural scientist at work, putting his proposition in a language free from image or fable, and 3) a philosopher, in his "metaphysical conviction," or presenting his fundamental concept ("unity" of all things) clothed in a hypothesis ("water" as the source of that unity). In the case of Thales, we may say the unity is two-fold: 1) as to the relation between man and nature. Before Thales, Greeks thought nothing of nature, seeing it as mere semblance, and putting all their faith in men and Gods. It is with Thales that they started to believe in nature as a fundamental part of life, 2) as to varying ways of knowing. Nietzsche notes: "When Thales says, "all is water," man is stung up out of the wormlike probings and creepings-about of his separate sciences. He intuits the ultimate resolution of all things and overcomes, by means of such intuition, the vulgar restrictions of the lower leves of knowledge" (p. 44).

The book is from Nietzsche's early period, written at about the same time as The Birth of Tragedy. Although a very small book, with just over 100 pages, it contains many seeds for such essential Nietzschean concerns and themes as the relation between art, philosophy and life, the role of education in culture, virtues of slow reading, or "how one becomes what one is." Widely neglected, but what Walter Kaufmann said of Beyond Good and Evil would be equally applied to this book. You will encounter "hundreds of doors it opens for the mind, revealing new vistas, problems, and relationships."

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is acknowledged as America's greatest architect. By the first decade of the twentieth century he had reexamined all aspects of architecture, pioneering advanced applications of materials, transforming interior space into continuous interwoven areas, and redefining architectural programs for the new democratic society he envisioned. Over the next five decades, while fulfilling specific commissions, he continued to conceive of individual buildings as solutions to general problems. His designs can be grouped into nine typologies according to the basic human functions they were designed to serve: communal work, commerce, worship, learning, the arts, recreation, the community, individual dwelling, and communal dwelling. Near the end of his life, in 1958, Wright published The Living City, the final version of his vision of an ideal social order. Indeed, all of his building and projects can be seen, retrospectively, as prototypes and proposals, models for the new, decentralized pattern of living that he offered as a blueprint for the future and from which we have much to learn today.

The contributors

David G. De Long, an architect, is Professor of Architecture and former Chair of the Graduate Group in Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania. His books include Frank Lloyd Wright: Designs for an American Landscape, 1922-1932 (1997), Louis I. Kahn: In the Realm of Architecture (1991), and Bruce Goff: Toward Absolute Architecture (1988). He has taught at the University of Sydney, Australia; the Middle East Technical University, Turkey; and Columbia University, New York, from which he received his Ph.D. in architectural history.

Jean-Louis Cohen is Professor at the Institut Français d'Urbanisme in Paris and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, New York. His publications include Mies van der Rohe (1996); Scenes of the World to Come: European Architecture and the American Challenge 1893-1960 (1995); André Lurçat (1894-1970); Autocritique d'un moderne (1995); and Le Corbusier and the Mystique of the USSR: Theories and Projects for Moscow, 1928-1936 (1992). He was recently appointed by the French Minister of Culture to create a museum of architecture in Paris.

J. Michael Desmond, and architect, is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at Louisiana State University, from which he received his Bachelor of Architecture degree. He holds his Master's degree from Harvard University and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught at Harvard and Tulane universities, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Massachusetts, and the Boston Architectural Center, and has practiced architecture in Louisiana, Massachusetts, and New York.

David A. Hanks is Director of Exhibitions International, New York City, and Consulting Curator for the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. He has held curatorial positions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Graham Foundation to carry out research for The Decorative Designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, Dutton, 1979.

Richard Joncas teaches and lectures on Frank Lloyd Wright as well as modern American and European architecture. His essay on Wright's Hanna house appeared in the September 1993 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. His dissertation for Stanford University, which he is currently preparing for publication, concerned Wright's later work and its non-rectangular geometry.

Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer came to the Taliesin Fellowship as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949. With the exception of a year he spent in Paris studying at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, he has remained with the Fellowship ever since. He is director of The Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, a member of the board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and the author of nearly forty books on Wright's life and work, notably Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks (1993). He lives in Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and studio and the international headquarters of the Wright Foundation, with his Doberman, Geronimo.

Jack Quinan is Professor in the School of Architecture at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he has taught since 1975. He also taught at the University of Rhode Island in 1972-75 and holds his Master's and Ph.D. from Brown University. The curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin house, he is currently completing a book on Wright's relationship with Martin, one of his leading clients. He is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Larkin Building: Myth and Fact (1987) and numerous articles on the architect.
