About the Author
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Epitome of "Show; Don't Tell"

The writing throughout RELEASE is phenomenal. It drew me right in, but not in a rushed manner. Ms. Mangan gives the characters time to develop, time for the reader to connect and become fully immersed in the whole situation and story. Of course, once that has been accomplished, the reader is then forcefully pushed down a rabbit hole of chaos along with the characters.

In a masterful display of 'show, don't tell,' RELEASE not only reads like watching a movie, but has parts and scenes that have every possibility of making the reader question his/her own sanity, scenes with such speed and chaos as to make the reader worry that they've missed something, or that they must be careful or they will something. The effectiveness of this technique is not something I've experienced whilst reading before now. These parts and scenes held so much impact that, honestly, I wasn't sure if I was wrong, the book was wrong, the character was wrong, or the whole universe had been upended! Turns out, everything was just as it should be and the only way to fully feel, read, and understand anything afterward requires being so fully immersed as to experience exactly what I felt. (After that, good luck even thinking about putting this book down!)

The ending, to me, was perfectly suiting. There was no rush to tidy up ends nor loose ends left dangling. The pace matched what I expected, matched my own feelings as I neared the final pages, and the message of it –the message that captured and summarized the whole meaning of the book, resonated so much with me that I was stunned. Yeah, I've been there, in a way, and seeing it put into words was like being smacked. Truly, it's the only way...

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading RELEASE and look forward to reading more by Amelia Mangan. This book could have gone horribly wrong, the storyline could have been a tangled mess of dead vines, but her writing really made this nothing short of, not just a wonderful read, but, a complete experience.

A staggering, powerful debut novel

Amelia Mangan's first full-length tale is as macabre as her brilliant short fiction, and displays a mastery of tone and atmosphere that sets her on a par with any seasoned horror writer you could name, her evocative prose conjuring imagery of such power that it feels as if the book's mood of dread and decay seeps from the page and into the reader's bones. This bleak fairy tale of lost souls and dark love, a twisted story of manipulation and madness, builds to a shocking finale that haunted me for months after. Release is not just a riveting vision of disquieting horror; it's a declaration that an essential new voice has arrived.

Fantastic debut!

Prior to RELEASE, I had never heard of Amelia Mangan, nor did I know anything very specific about this book, so I had no idea what I was getting into. Just that it was an interesting premise written by a new author. That’s a combo that hooks me every time. I love delving into the unknown and the unexpected, and what I discovered with RELEASE was unexpectedly delightful.

For a first novel, RELEASE surprised the hell out of me. It’s one of the more accomplished debut efforts I’ve seen in a long time. Mangan displays a mastery of descriptive imagery and a flare for character driven story that is unusual in a new author and something that, in this reviewer’s opinion, is crucial to a good story.

In RELEASE, Stanley Fitzgerald has recently been released from the mental hospital where he has been incarcerated for the last ten years. Against his doctor’s advice, he returns to the home of his childhood and, with the help of a distant cousin, attempts to put his life back together. But Marina, the murderous sociopath he met and befriended in the asylum, has other plans in store. One rainy night she shows up on Stanley’s doorstep, barefoot and drenched to the bone. Uninvited, she moves in and quickly takes over Stanley’s life. From this point on things get crazy and Stanley is plunged into a nightmare of manipulation, psychological torture, and despair.

With deft, lyrical prose, Amelia Mangan paints her story on the page with vivid detail, well written, flowing dialog, and outstanding character development. RELEASE is a fast moving, engrossing, and ultimately heartrending tragedy that moves along at a natural, well-managed pace. The characters are damn near perfect and Mangan’s grasp of language is top-notch, making for an epic, beautifully twisted Gothic fairy tale. If I were to recommend only one debut novel for 2015, RELEASE would be it, hands down.

Excellent practical introduction

The majority of do-it-yourself holography books have at least one major flaw. These range from "you can do this on a sand table" (sand and optics do not mix, sir!) to "now, from the Laplace transform of the spatial function we can see" (maybe *he* can see it, but non-physicists can't.)
Iovine's book has none of these flaws. He just explains how to do holography with minimum equipment and expense. It's a practical book. Holography can be expensive if you're just going to try it out, but Iovine shows you how to cut the costs by building your own laser, your own optical table, beam shutter, and how to use film rather than plates.
If you want theory, he has a fine -- short -- and intelligible explanation of why it works, with no mathematics required.
I've got Saxby, Unterseher and Iovine on the book shelf of the optics lab. They're all classical texts in their own right, but only one of them is dog-eared, and it's Iovine.

Enlightening!

This book is excellent. Iovine describes how light works, how holograms are formed, how to build inexpensive optic stands, how to make a high-voltage power supply, how to put together a timed shutter mechanism--okay, you get the point. Although some of the information presented is now long-in-the-tooth, the book, in my opinion, is one of the best resources available for the DIY holography enthusiast.

Octavia is truly a master mind science fiction writer. Her stories parallel so many life lessons that cause one to think in ways that you would have never fathomed had you not read her work. I will even have to do some research on the book as I presume, the average brain is not thinking along the same lines she is. The book is so incredibly fascinating, you just have to read it and its even better if you've read her other works that have led up to this book. Trust me, once you get in, you will have a hard time putting it down.

Thirty-seven years after reading "Kindred," which ignited my interest in science fiction, I've read two of the three Patternist books. What I particularly love is the suggestion of a deep power and sensitivity African Americans have inherently within them. The alternate reality Butler offers piques the curiosity too of the power within all of us. I have always believed humans are subjected to the limitations of society but these books effectively illustrate it!

About the Author
Douglas Ewan Cameron Douglas Ewan Cameron is a Professor Emeritus from the Department of Mathematics of The University of Akron (Akron, OH). Upon retirement he and his wife took up residence for half the year on the shore of Hubbard Lake (Spruce MI), which basically is the setting for his Up North stories. The other half of the year is spent in Copley OH where they lived while working and it is from there they do most of their traveling. They have visited all seven continents and over one hundred countries. Places they have visited have become settings in his books including Hong Kong, which is important in Wings of a Butterfly. He has written all his life albeit research papers while he was working and short stories in his youth. Retirement has given him time to fish and write, both past times he loves. Richard E. Blahut is the Henry Magnuski Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the recipient of many awards including the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (1998), the Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal. He was named a Fellow of IBM Corporation in 1980 (where he worked for over 30 years) and was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1990.

Human work is one of the main forces driving the development of our society, economy and quality of life. Statistics from the International Labour Organization indicate that there are currently 1.1 billion "economically active individuals" on five continents who on average spend more than half of their waking hours at work. This number entails an enormous potential impact for concepts, methods and tools of industrial engineering and ergonomics in the design of human work. This book focuses on the analysis, design and evaluation of complex work systems and work processes in engineering design, manufacturing and service. Its 46 scientific articles, contributed by internationally recognized researchers from 12 countries, provide unique insights into the latest developments and trends in these areas. The book is clearly organized and distinguishes seven levels of abstraction that emerge when human work is studied using different analytical approaches and different time scales.

About the Author

Christopher M. Schlick is Professor of Engineering at RWTH Aachen University and head of the Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics. He is also a member of the management board of the FGAN Research Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE). His research interests include modeling and simulation of work and business systems as well as the ergonomic design of human-machine interfaces.
