Strassler, an unaffiliated scholar of classical studies, has remedied many of the flaws of Richard Crawley's 1874 translation of The Peloponnesian War. He has added descriptive paragraph-by-paragraph synopses, topic headers on every page, numerous maps keyed to the adjoining text, explanatory footnotes, an extensive index, an excellent introduction by Victor Davis Hanson (California State Univ.), and 11 appendixes (by various scholars) on politics, warfare, and society in the Greece of the fifth century B.C.E. What the editor has done he has done well, creating a valuable basic reference for students of ancient history. His work has only two flaws: it lacks a substantial bibliography, having only a two-page "concise" one; and the price will put it out of reach of many institutions. Shame on the Publisher!

This is a superb edition of one of the greatest books ever written. However, there is a MAJOR CAVEAT: the paperback edition has a TERRIBLE BINDING, and will fall apart on you as you read it, guaranteed. This happened to every student in our class. Such a fantastic edition of a classic should obviously be sewn, rather than glued, but the publisher has apparently tried to cheap it out with an inferior glued binding which, I repeat, WILL NOT LAST. We wrote the publisher as a group, but did not receive an adequate reaponse. By all means, use this edition, but if you want to keep it, BUY THE HARDCOVER.

Stop! Get the Cambridge Edition

Before you buy this classic Landmark edition, please consider the newer, Cambridge translation by Jeremy Mynott.

As someone who read both editions (don’t ask), I much prefer the Cambridge version. It was translated and released in 2013, while the Landmark edition was translated in 1874. Landmark’s Victorian English is dense and difficult, while Cambridge uses simpler language and – most importantly – more sentence breaks. The extra periods help prevent your eyes from glazing over as your brain tries to remember what was going on five lines ago in the same sentence. (If you want more details on the differences between the Landmark and Cambridge editions, see my review of the Thucydides: The War of the Peloponnesians and the Athenians (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought).)

I’m sure I would have given up on Thucydides had I been restricted to the Landmark edition, thus depriving me of a great adventure in politics, psychology, history, and war. Reading Thucydides really did change my life, and I encourage you to follow my footsteps down the easier path.

One of the most complete packages for understanding The Peloponnesian War. Also, the Landmark books are all loaded with maps to help the reader gain strategic insight. The entire "Landmark" series is indispensable. I have all extant volumes and am waiting with bated breath for upcoming volumes. Buy it.

Fundamentals of Arabic

The question is, do you want to learn Arabic, or do you want to sound like you speak a bit of Arabic? Having started Arabic with this book, I will admit that at times it seems rather harsh and dry. However, I truly believe that no native-English speaker can get to an intermediate, much less advanced, level of Arabic without having a solid grasp of the grammar and structure - which is pretty tough for just about every beginner. From watching my current classmates who started on al-Kitaab struggle through the upper levels and beg for more grammar reviews, I'm convinced the "Orange Book" is the best foundation out there. A good teacher can make anything fun.

useful, but boring

the second part of EMSA inherits the problems of the first part - it is unbelivably boring. the reading texts are a bit more diverse, probably because the level of students is higher. but still, some of them are just plain stupid - my vote would go to unit 35, where the highlight of the visit to jerusalem is the fact that the friend's wife made some dinner and they drank arabic coffee. what IS arabic coffee anyway? plus, the texts are all edited, which is a bit discouraging for the students, I think. the grammar part is a lot more useful - if you don't mind the choice of examples. I used the book a lot as a reference when I was an intermediate student and found it very helpful. so the stars given are for the grammar parts and not the rest - especially not the layout. I would only recommend this book if you have some serious gaps in your arabic that you need to close (and quickly), or use it as a reference. you can, then, use it on your own, even though it doesn't have the key to the exercises. but as a complete introductory course better find something that has authentic materials - you'll enjoy it so much more.

Okay for the Classroom

For a long time, Abboud and McCarus was the only game in town if you wanted to learn Arabic. Virtually every college course in Arabic used it throughout the USA.
Now the picture is different. Arabic studies are not the arcane field they once were, and there is a great variety of material out there. Still, this set has its virtues. It has a lot of drill material, and while this can be a bore, it is a godsend in the final analysis if you really want to learn literary Arabic.
The abundance of material makes it difficult to use as a self-teacher, however, and its better not used for that. Also, the print (done with an Arabic typewriter) is hard to read. My advise to the student is to start off with another course, and then switch to this series of readers when you've reached the intermediate stage.

Michael R. Solomon is professor of marketing and director of the Center for Consumer Research in the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He also is professor of consumer behaviour at the Manchester School of Business, The University of Manchester, U.K. Michael’s primary research and consulting interests include consumer behavior, branding, and marketing applications of virtual worlds. He has written several textbooks and trade books; his Consumer Behavior text is the most widely used in the world. Michael often speaks to business groups about new trends in consumer behavior and marketing strategy.

Mary Anne Poatsy is a senior adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various business, management, and computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. Before teaching, she was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking Department.

A Good Place To Start

I just purchased this book and it's great for a beginner [skincare crafter] like me. DIY recipes have always intrigued me, and overall this book is a good addition to my general DIY book collection. Tons of great choices for facial masks, bath concoctions, etc., however, I wish it'd have a few more recipes for facial and eye creams. The one and only eye recipe entitled "Eye Cream" is really not a cream at all, but a recipe made up of several oils. Same for the facial moisturizers on pages 28 and 29. While oils in skin care recipes are to be expected, I am not a fan of just oils. The Comfrey Infused Oil looks great, but it calls for fresh comfrey. I don't have access to fresh comfrey and it does not specify of dried can be substituted. I am assuming so, but it would have been nice for the author to state so. Another issue is when referring to other recipes within the book (as in the case of recipes within recipes), the author only provides the chapter, rather than the page. It's much faster to have the exact page than flipping through a chapter. Lastly, there is no Resource section. Still on the hunt for a better book. I have my eye on Shannon Buck's upcoming book, soon to be released.

Good book to fight stress or depression

I had a lot of fun with this book-enough to purchase after borrowing from the library. I hadn't made skin care products before and the recipes were easy enough to follow. Most of the recipes I made (and I made a lot of them) turned out and I have gone back to making more of the same one when I ran out rather than searching for a new recipe from a different source. There is enough variety with several recipes covering each area: scrubs, toners, moisturizers, hair care products. . I'm surprised there weren't any for making deodorant or toothpaste. There is a small section that explains the reason for choosing the specific ingredients which is always nice to know. There are quite a few different ingredients and I found myself hunting through health stores to find various ingredients. This was fun for me and helped with stress. I could see it driving someone crazy though. To complicate things, some of the recipes involve two steps. First you make an infusion and then when that is ready you incorporate it into the actual recipe. This turned out to be a whole lot of fun. I infused witch hazel (which I had never used before) with vanilla. Once I learned how to infuse I got busy and infused coconut oil with all the leftover tea that I had. Then that was used in the lip balm recipe (which is fantastic). This also inspired me to make my own extracts. The author touches briefly on skin care and blemishes emerging with cleansing. Perhaps more discussion regarding reactive healing would enhance this book. There was no guidance on making rose petal powder which is used in several recipes. I searched the net but didn't really find much so eventually I baked the petals and then ran them through the coffee grinder ( a must have). There is a scrub recipe that is fantastic-but It involves turmeric and turned my pale skin yellow-like can't scrub it off for two days yellow. Probably some skin tones benefit but it was horrid on mine. My tub was also dyed yellow and I had to use bleach to get it off. The scrub was so amazing I actually knowingly did it all over again. However if I were to make it I wouldn't use the turmeric ( yes it's great stuff but...). There is a pre tan scrub with citrus and my understanding is that sun exposure and citrus don't go together. Several recipes involve comphrey which is not readily found in my area. Research on it revealed some controversy although for skin care is supposed to be ok. All in all this is a great book for someone who is willing to search for ingredients. I supplemented the recipes with my essential oils and learned a few new things that I can do with the roses,lavender and herbs that grow in the yard. I also learned a whole lot about the various ingredients that I have never previously used and was inspired to move further into tj

It would have recieved 5 stars from me if all the recipes had been accurate. For example, the cocoa butter body butter said it would yield 8 ounces when it only yielded 4 ounces. That's a big difference when one is trying to figure in the costs. I ended up essentially paying double what I was anticipating to make that batch. I was extremely careful in my measuring and cooking so I know I followed the directions accurately. In the same recipe it says to add the essential oils twice in a row. Not a huge deal but sloppy editing is annoying to me. That being said, I've made two other recipes out of the book that turned out perfectly and were really quite good (the lip balm and whipped Shea body butter).
