What just happened?? This is not your typical romance. The only words that I have for this novel is rough and aggressive. The relationship between Eric and Faith is intense and brutal. Over time that shifts and transforms, but it is almost overwhelming. I don't know how I feel about the aggression that becomes a sweet romance. It is a hot and cold area for me. At points this seems hot and intriguing, but at moments I was astounded and deterred by the situation. Due to my complete and utter bewilderment of the story I have rated Fighting Faith a three book, because it is not something I could say I love without a doubt. I have a pile of concerns about the story that I don't feel comfortable with.

Oscar Wilde (1854 1900) was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. an almost unreadable version

I took a Yellow Nineties literature course in college, and the professor told us to stay away from "Teleny," that Oscar Wilde had nothing to do with it. With my interest piqued, I went to the university library and discovered there was a copy of "Teleny" in the rare book room. I read it in one sitting. I agreed that Oscar Wilde probably had nothing to do with it.

But now, many years later, I've read it again, and this doesn't even seem like the same text I read before. I will give Oscar Wilde chapter 7 and a long passage of chapter 8. Beyond that, I'm sure many other writers contributed most of it. I just wish an editor had been involved. While reading this version, I concluded that some kind of optical scanner had been used to transfer the text from one source to another. In the process, very strange things happened. The letter "m" often gets subsituted for "th," so that the word "that" appears as "mat." "Mink" is really "think." But it doesn't stop there. "Concerts" becomes "conceits." "Kiss" becomes "lass." The best one is "mush-scented courtesans," which I hope is supposed to be "musk-scented." Add to that the fact that some French words were just guessed at, so we end up with "mignans," "matrons" for "marrons," and "Angut" for "Angot." Anyway, the text is so corrupted that you practically have to be a cryptographer to decipher it some of it.

The early chapters have lots of typical Victorian hetero scenes, but once the homosexual ones start, one must agree that this is a different kind of prose. The literary and classical allusions abound. (Some of them are so obscure that I couldn't find out about them using google search.) There is an attempt at a Poe atmosphere near the end, which is telegraphed from a mile away. The end is "open," with a hint that there might be a sequel, but apparently there never was one.

In all honesty, I cannot recomment this New Traveller's Companion Series version (no pictures) because of the constant typos and bizarre punctuation that render the prose almost unreadable.

Accurate and up to date

Truly a classic of homosexual literature. I first read the Teleny almost 50 years ago when I was in my 20's. Now, after a life-time of experiences, spanning from the 1950's up to today (2013), I am flabbergasted at how accurately and completely the text, which was written over 100 years ago, describes male homosexual love: emotions and sex acts. Although the story's setting is apparently France at the end of the nineteenth century, the feelings and actions of the characters are as up-to-date as if they were taking place today. I recommend this book to anyone interested in male homosexuality.

Check the edition; they are not all the same.

Classic tale which I have read in both French and English (Brian Hooker translation). Worth reading in either version.
I find it inexpressibly bizarre that Amazon displays reviews of any edition of this work with every edition they offer, making it difficult to know whether the reviewer is referring to THIS edition -- offered for $0 with a plain-looking bi-color cover, in French -- or to a copy of the truly delightful Brian Hooker translation, or to some other version suffering with a brickbat translation.
Amazon should know better. Assuming that the various editions of _Cyrano_ are fungible is comparable to assuming that any online purchasing site is comparable to Amazon.com. Is that what Amazon thinks?

The original, unbeatable text

Of course you will need to read French but if you master the language you should definitely give it a shot.
This is my favorite play ever; one of my top ten books and the only play in there.
Forget the movies (except maybe the French one with Depardieu), and no it does not end very well, but Edmond Rostand takes you for a ride through love and war and wit and charm and fun and, yes, cooking, all in some of the most brilliant yet funny example of mastery of the alexandrine.
I laugh out to tears each time I read it.

Useful for having alongside edition if learning French/English with this text...

Useful. Just got a house in Bergerac & have to learn French & should know this story (as this play helped to make the town famous!). This edition is useful while going through the French edition/dialogue, as it has a good selection of words & fantastic to see how to say something in English various ways in French & have the play dialogue translated with various selections of nuance which is clearly shown with the Thesaurus entries...will make going through the rather odd play a lot more of a practical exercise... and more memorable (I type hopefully).
