Must Read!!

Kara McKormick wants to be a star! She's a seventeen-year-old girl who is known for being a contestant on "The Book of Love" which you can read about in Krista's first novel, "First Date". In this novel, Kara tries out for a variety show, "Teens Rock". Unbeknownst to the ten girls who are competing against each other, they must impress their housemother, Flora. When "America's Next Star", Chad Beacon, decides to take on acting, his parents demand his co-star be a Christian, Flora, their assistant, poses as the girls' housemother. This was such an amazing book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! There was more to this novel than the average "follow your dreams"; the story had a clear, Christian message, and I loved that Krista wasn't afraid to express Christianity in this novel. I also loved the relationships in this novel: Kara & Addy, Kara & Chad, Chad & Jonathon, and Addy & Jonathon). Despite the fact that this novel was loosely based on the story of Issac and Rebekah in Genesis 24, it wasn't overly relegious; it was still fun, enjoyable, and showcased struggles without jamming one's beliefs down your throat. I love reading a good Christian book every once in awhile, because it relaxes, strengthens, and grounds me; it's a reminder of my faith. I think everyone should read this novel, even if you're not a believer; it puts things in perspective for you!

In the World Starring Me?

My most recent selection from Book Sneeze is Starring Me, a fictional young adult novel written by Krista McKee. This book is the follow up to First Date, although each is its own unique story. The characters cross over, but Starring Me is its own story.

Kara is a young, hopeful, wanna be actress who is selected to be one of 10 girls to "audition" for a variety show. The exact details of the show, including the costar, are kept secret from the girls trying out.

The exact details revolve around Chad - the latest winner of an American Idol type show who, after only a year, is already tired of the teen heartthrob lifestyle. When he and his parents are pitched the idea for a variety show, they set some ground rules of their own. Chad's parents insist their son's costar must be a Christian, desiring the girl to be uplifting to his spiritual walk.

For me, the book was only meh. The story line didn't contain twists, turns, or anything surprising/exciting. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed the author's writing style. I think its unfair of me to expect a novel for teens
to be as complex as others I read, but I found the predictability a bit tired.

This book could be a great spring board, however, for the "in the world but not of the world discussion." Should we surround ourselves with Christians lest we be tempted to stray? I don't agree with the position taken by the parents (and presumably the author) but is certainly a topic worth talking about.

Must Read!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for sending me this e-galley through their Book Sneeze program. Starring Me is a fun, refreshing read about a girl as feisty as her red hair, a cute boy and the chance of a lifetime. This story is loosely based on the biblical story of Issac and Rebekah and is a companion novel to McGee's debut, First Date, (where we first meet Kara).

Kara McCormick was born to perform and while she didn't win the boy on The Book of Love, she came away with an even better prize in her new best friend Addy. The girls have a lot in common but the one thing they don't share is Addy's belief in God. Kara doesn't see the need for Him in her life even though she's seen Him work in Addy's. All that changes when Kara gets the chance to audition for a new teen sketch comedy show, convinced it's her ticket to making her dreams come true. When things don't go as smoothly as she expected, she'll discover that God works in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not. Kara also gets a lesson about what's really important and the meaning of real love - the kind that's all consuming and never ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kara! She's straightforward, selfless and laugh-out-loud funny. She shows integrity and an openness to what Addy and several others have to say. There's a sweetness to the friendship she develops with Chad and parents of younger readers have nothing to worry about. The idea of courtship; not dating until you're serious about finding a lifelong partner is addressed with Kara and Addy discussing the pros and cons of bouncing from one relationship to the next.

Krista McGee is one of the few Christian authors I've found who is able to share a message of love, forgiveness and grace without sounding preachy or cheesy. McGee's characters are believable and relateable. I'm a Christian and I don't enjoy reading stories where everything is over the top or with characters who are too "perfect".

This couple definitely have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Delaney is a coyote shifter who has just come back from a cruise where he felt lonely. He returns to work at Trickster Technologies and immediately smells his mate. He has dated mainly women but as a shifter he realises his mate could be either sex, his is a male as it happens. He doesn't have a lot of experience with men but that's ok, he is willing to learn with his mate. Except his mate is not a shifter he is human and he is straight and he has no knowledge of shifters, oh and he has a girlfriend. Hmm, not going as Delaney thought meeting his mate would go. For a start he sent his mate, Mark, running from his office when he read some signals wrong and tried to kiss him in a business meeting. Okay then, some work to do there.
So Mark, having run out on Delaney's office talks to his girlfriend who tells him to report Delaney for sexual harassment, which he intends to do...maybe. First he needs to run and think and to ease the stress. While out on his circuit he notices a big dog following him, but when he tries to catch him he can't find the dog. Upon returning home he interrupts some burglars and is rescued by a big dog, which he realises is a coyote...who protected him. Things keep getting weirder when Delaney appears in front of him...where the coyote had been. Yeah fainting is a good choice about now.
How do you help your human accept shifters are real, mates are real, and that although Mark is straight he now has a male mate? And what were those thieves up to?
This is a nicely constructed story, although I did work out who was up to no good really early on. It could have been longer, but it was enjoyable anyway. This is the first book of Nicola Cameron's I have read and it was worth the purchase price. I am looking for more in the same genre from this author.

Shifter Mates

When Delaney Smith returns to work from his vacation, he’s a little surprised to sense his mate in the building. Being a Coyote Shifter, he knows the importance of the mate bond, so when his mate turns out to be a male, he’s not really too surprised. But his straight mate who happens to have a girlfriend is shocked when Delaney makes a pass at him.

Mark Fellowes is loving his new contract job, until the boss comes across his desk and tries to kiss him. He is shocked and upset, at first, until he stops to think about his bodies reaction to the man. Trying to clear his mind, he goes for a run, only to return to some rather unsavoury characters in his apartment.

Delaney is there to protect Mark, and his plan to take things slow with Mark are thrown out the window. He is forced to share his secret with Mark as well as the fact they are mates, and hope that he doesn’t push the shy human over the edge of sanity.

I’ve never read a story about Coyote shifters and I quite liked the uniqueness it brought to this story. Shifter mates and insta-love are being stretched thin, but Delaney and Mark were just so smexy, that I was able to overlook the redundancy of the subject matter. Then there was a little twist at the end that I didn’t see coming, and I do like it when an author can surprise me.

This is a must read for fans of gay shifters and protective alpha male types, very sexy. I hope it’s the start to a series.

First of all let me just say that i love the character Mark but he kind of turned a bit too quickly for someone who wasn't "gay". (Why bother with labels anyway?) Delaney was pretty funny with his immediate change of mind when it comes to humans. Or maybe to just this one particular human .I loved how determined Delaney was and i adored how open and loyal Mark was.

I definitely hope this is a series and we can expect some sequels!

About the Author
Cath Thomas:Multiple award-winning beader and published designer, Cath started beading more than 10 years ago. She sees it as a Zen activity guided by the Universe, to create dimensional paintings or objects with big pixels. With a subtle minimalist approach, Cath often creates designs using creative game tactics and rules. She mixes off-loom beading, bead embroidery and mixed media elements resulting in little intricate delights, pieces which convey a feeling, sensation, emotion, or chant nature.Cath grew up in the Netherlands and Switzerland. She graduated with a foreign languages degree. Cath worked for an environmental NGO until due to fibromyalgia she became intolerant to direct natural and artificial light. She took all the photographs for this book without lamps or direct sunlight in her northeast exposed apartment in Gland, near beautiful Lake Geneva.

Gerlinde Lenz:In 1988, Gerlinde invented how to make bead-woven models of Plato's 'ideal solids', along with numerous derivations thereof. 'Geometric Jewels' became the brand name for her jewelry based on these self-supporting beaded beads.In 2004, she invented Diamond Weave in response to a challenge. She has found other new weaves since then, but none as incredibly versatile as this one.Her approach to bead weaving is technical, usually led by the question: 'Can I?' This book is her dream come true, because now you can work and play with Diamond Weave too.From a German family of scientists and engineers, she was introduced to bead weaving as well as to Platonic solids in childhood. She studied Biology and Chemistry and worked as a technical assistant in scientific labs in Germany and Australia.

SPECTACULAR and Marvelous!

I have had the opportunity to read this book in many of its stages during its process. It has been hard for me to squelch my excitement about this book and what it introduces to the world while waiting for it to be finalised.

Now that its here...... I am ready to share my thoughts.

It is not often the beading world gets a new stitch to learn. We get new ideas sometimes on combining stitches, using them in new ways but it is rare indeed to see the invention of a totally new stitch. Here is it though a completely new thread path thanks to Gerlinde Lenz and her innovation. Cath Thomas then brings it all to life. Explains it in detail.. shows us with graphs and photos how to work with it and provides us with all the basics, clear projects and inspiration to propel our understanding of how to do it. Diamond Weave is totally new, works up fast and is pleasing to the eye. The possibilities of combing it with other stitches is endless. There is inspiration here for you to take it where your heart goes in your own beadwork. It's simply fabulous. Not just fabulous because the stitch has a rhythm you can get into but its fabulous to have something new to play around with.

You can't go wrong ever when learning something new and you cant go wrong now with this amazingly easy to learn stitch that will add new dimensions to your own work.

Kudos to you Cath Thomas and Gerlinde Lenz for a job well done. I for one thank you!

As someone who loves books and who loves beads, I was intrigued to hear about a new stitch.
I have had the privilege of reading draft copies and the final book is beautiful. Once I understood the basics I couldn't wait to bead more and more pieces with different beads! I love the way one can paint pictures using small round beads such as pearls or pressed glass beads. Imagine my delight to at last find a way to use the tiny semiprecious beads in my stash.
Cath and Gerlinde have taken time to explore many of the possibilities of this unique thread path. This book takes one on a journey of discovery starting with the basics and including many variations. There are many photographs and the instructions include words as well as detailed illustrations.
Diamond weave is extremely versatile and the book includes variations of Diamond weave using cylinder beads and seed beads.

This is an excellent book! This really is a new stitch for beading. There has been some who say it is a variation of RAW but that is like saying brick stitch is a variation of peyote. So... what makes this an excellent book? The explanations and illustrations are clear and precise. The basic stitch is clear and there are interesting projects. Then, there are MANY variations, again with interesting projects. There is a complete exploration of the stitch which provides Hours of interesting beading fun and inspiration. It is everything you want in a beading book. If you don't like the stitch, then that is your opinion of the stitch, but in terms of what a beading book should be, THIS BOOK is fabulous!

A beautiful, subtle rumination on the philosophy of science

This wonderful book has long been available online, but I'm delighted to see that the author has chosen to publish it in physical form. This is the kind of book you really want to be able to flip through and fill with marginalia. I've been reading through it about once a year, and each time I find myself understanding it a little better. The author has a great gift for presenting challenging material in a way that remains accessible to those of us who haven't made it past calculus. Equal parts history, philosophy of science, and physics textbook, it's an absolute treasure, and I'm delighted to finally be able to give the author some money.

Although I'd previously read Brown's selfsame book published online (go to http://www.mathpages.com/rr/rrtoc.htm), I wanted a more convenient version, so bought the book. It's truly amazing -- not only does the book have pretty much all you'd want to know about special and general relativity, it includes many historical, philosophical and even poetic references regarding these subjects.

There are only a few truly worthwhile and comprehensive references on relativity available today; Zee's "Einstein Gravity in a Nutshell" is probably the best (available on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_16?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=einstein%20gravity%20in%20a%20nutshell&sprefix=einstein+gravity%2Caps%2C172), along with Brown's text. Either will make you articulate in a subject that arguably represents the pinnacle of the human mind.

Only one warning -- the details of Brown's text can be very mathematical, so you'd better be prepared, at least at the undergraduate science or engineering level.

This book is full of ideas on Attic Window quilts and wall hangings. The authors take the reader through colour and pattern choices, how to do an attic window and finally and great way to do binding. There are many coloured photographs using a variety of different fabrics. Included are the use of panels, using several different fabrics, applique and different size windows within a quilt or wall hanging.
I have used this book many times when doing attic windows and it has inspired me to look at this technique creatively.

The book provides a comprehensive lesson in making the beautiful Attic Windows quilt, from the simplest version to the most complex. Includes lessons in perspective and use of tone to add depth. There are pictures of many sample quilts for inspiration, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I heighly recommend for quilters of all skill levels.

Must read for overcoming doubt and fear!

Ah, just as I suspected: all that think-positive-Pollyanna-drivel is poppycock. According to Russ Harris, author of "The Confidence Gap", we evolved to think negatively. A hundred thousand years ago, if you weren't on constant vigil for dangers like lions, tigers, and bears in your environment, you didn't live very long, certainly not long enough to pass on your Pollyanna genes.

So thinking negatively is ingrained in us, and I'm happy to hear that because I sure was getting sick and tired of those Stuart Smalley daily affirmations.

"The Confidence Gap" is a guide to overcoming fear and self-doubt. As a recovering drug addict it's important, very important for me to learn how to deal with fear, because I always dealt with this problem with drugs and "liquid courage." That was my solution for overcoming low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity.

Hellen Keller said that life is a daring adventure or nothing. If we're stifled by fear then our life will certainly be nothing. We'll stay stuck in our comfort zones as life passes us by. Harris lists four common reasons why we're afraid to leave our comfort zones:

1. Obstacles - our minds point out all the obstacles.
2. Self-judgements - our minds point out all our weaknesses.
3. Comparisons - our minds compare us to others who seem to be better than us.
4. Predictions - our minds predict failure.

Before I published my book, I thought it would be the greatest thing I'd ever accomplished, but as soon as it came out, I was attacked by self-judgements. I thought what I'd written was stupid, and of inferior quality, and I almost regretted doing it.

Even worse, I had to write for this website. Every time I wrote something and posted it, I would wake up in the middle of the night berating myself, "Stupid, stupid, stupid. I can't believe I wrote that." I wanted to give up. I discovered that I was "fusing" to these thoughts. That's all they were: thoughts. They were not based on fact, and if they were, so what?

Don't I have the right to say stupid things and make mistakes? So I continued to write and consider it all practice, because there's no way I'll ever get better if I don't continue to plug away. I "defused" from those negative thoughts. They still come up every time I write something, but now I can say, "There's that stupid, self-judging thought. Bye-bye stupid self-judging thought." So I was glad to read this quote from best-selling author Peter Carey in "The Confidence Gap": "Writing is being prepared to be stupid and make mistakes."

There's a lot more useful information in "The Confidence Gap" including Harris' golden rule for winning the confidence game: "The actions of confidence come first; the feelings of confidence come later." There are nine more rules, so instead of listing them here, I'll recommend you buy the book and discover them yourself.

Russ Harris is one of the world’s leading authorities on one of the most cutting-edge forms of therapy known as Acceptance and Commitment Training, or ACT for short (pronounced like the word act not A.C.T.).

REDUNDANTLY HELPFUL

I judge the impact of a book by the amount of index notes I create on the very first pages of the book for quick review. My list is a two pages long. I purchased the book to read about the concept regarding FEAR and DARE, but I got so much more out of this. My understanding of confidence has expanded beyond Belief, Knowledge and Skill as I typically understood it. My behavior quite often fell into "have to feel confident first, then act" despite the desire to take action despite how I actually feel. I will now be better equipped to take Action in the midst of those negative, anxious feelings because I now know how to much better deal with them so I no longer stay Fused with them.

One of the best redundant things I like about this book is that he continually emphasizes that we all have the negative, anxious thoughts. I think, at least for myself, I have viewed my negative, anxious thoughts as an indicator that I am not ready or that they will overwhelm me. The concept of Notice, Name, Neutralize isn't new for me as I have read various forms of it over the years. However, the author's redundant emphasis on Acting in the midst of the feelings and the techniques he provides will be very helpful for me. I am looking forward to what new doors will open as I learn to not let my fear block me from Acting in accordance of my values and goals.

About the Author

BILL BONNER is President and CEO of Agora Publishing, one of the world's largest financial newsletter companies. He is the creator of the Daily Reckoning, a financial newsletter with more than 540,000 readers of six different global daily editions, including French and German. Bonner is coauthor of the international bestsellers Financial Reckoning Day and Empire of Debt with Addison Wiggin, as well as Mobs, Messiahs, and Markets (coauthored with Lila Rajiva), the New York Times bestseller. In 2011, he wrote Dice Have No Memory: Big Bets and Bad Economics from Paris to the Pampas. He files his Daily Reckoning dispatches from a ranch in Argentina, the home office in Maryland, various joint ventures, and other hot spots around the globe.

WILL BONNER is Executive Director of the Bonner & Partners Family Office, an independent estate planning and investment research group. Will got his start working in the "mailroom" of the family business, Agora, at age eleven. Later, he helped launch, and served as CEO of Early to Rise, a leading self-improvement publishing business. In 2007, he opened Agora's South American office in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and set up a successful business partnership that is one of the largest investment research and education companies publishing in Spanish. He is a graduate of St. John's College's Great Books program, earning a double major in philosophy and mathematics. Bonner lives with his wife and two children in Delray Beach, Florida. He's the eldest of Bill's six children.

Excellent

This book is a compilation of the writings that have been published to private paying members of their Bonner Family Office service from the last three years. Good advice to build and keep multigenerational wealth, and in particular, how to avoid letting the government steal it and waste it. It also suggests structures to help future generations from squandering hard earned wealth.

It lays the foundation for a family bank to fund new businesses and education, and be independent of the current financial system in its unsound condition.

Also an excellent general resource for estate planning

Will Bonner focuses on a 100 year time scape of wealth building, but I saw in the book a lot of things that I can do short term. His advice on no surprises for the inheritors and a thorough review with the inheritors of the why's and wherefore's of the structure of any trusts created looks very sound. The book is well written and quite engaging. I have struggled with at least 6 estate planning books that I never managed to read all the way through. Bonner's book was a refreshing exception to this. I would strongly recommend it whatever the time frame of your financial planning goals.

Family Freedom

Great book, entertaining and informative whether you already have a fortune or plan on building one. The irony of money is that it is only a tool, a means to an end, not really about money but freedom. Ultimately, the most important achievement family money can provide to future generations is a way to communicate and hopefully instill your values. The truth will set you free.
