Many African stories, whether or not they are about Kwaku Ananse the 'spider man, ' are called, 'Spider Stories.' This book is about how that came to be.

About the Author
Gail E. Haley is a young but prolific author and illustrator. She has fourteen books to her credit, in addition to illustrating her husband's syndicated newspaper column, "Parents and Children." Miss Haley is the mother of two children -- Marguerite, age tow, and another born shortly after she completed this book.

The idea for this book came to Miss Haley as a result of living in the Caribbean. There she found stories in which tigers and leopards appeared. These, happily, are not part of the Caribbean fauna. And so she traced the origins of these stories back to their sources in Africa. She studied African folklore and culture in preparation for writing and illustrating this book, and to capture the flavor of the languages, the people, their customs and life styles.

The woodcuts that illustrate this book were cut and printed by Miss Haley in her own print shop. She lives and works in New York with her family, surrounded by a large collection of early children's books, toys and games, cut outs and dolls, going back to the seventeenth century.

Spider man, spider man. Does whatever a spider can.

My husband grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and well remembers the Anase stories that were told to him and his companions in their youth. For myself, Anase was not a character I heard much about as a child. This is a pity when you consider that books like, "A Story A Story" were striving to teach children about the great African (I apologize for not knowing the exact region) folktales. Based on one of many spider stories, "A Story A Story" is a variation on the Prometheus tale. In this case, however, the desired gift of the gods isn't fire but that of stories themselves.

As the tale tells us, long ago all the stories in the world belonged to the Sky God. On behalf of mankind, Anase (presented here not as a spider but as a kind of old spider man) spins a web into the sky and requests the Sky God's stories. The big man upstairs is amused by the request and presents Anase with a series of three near impossible tasks. If the spider man is able to accomplish them, he will be granted the stories. Using his wits and some clever techniques, Anase accomplishes each trial and in the end the world receives a golden box of the Sky God's stories.

Just looking at this tale I realized that it was a perfect companion picture book to Marcia Brown's "Once a Mouse". In both cases woodcut illustrations decorate a well-known fable from a land other than America. In this particular book, children at all familiar with the Brer Rabbit tarbaby story will instantly recognize elements of it in "A Story A Story". Adults could then let their kids know that slaves from Africa would often bring their stories with them, changing them in their new land with some subtle variations. The book itself is illustrated beautifully with what looks to be a series of brightly colored woodcuts. Be sure to locate other fine Anase stories (they exist in abundance, doncha know) if this one suits your fancy. It reflects beautifully the cleverness and richness of a story not too new to our American ears.

A wonderful introduction to fables

My daughter was not particularly interested in hearing a story the first time we opened this book, but within a few pages, the magic of the story, and the wonderful cadence of the words, captured her attention. She was spell bound to the end. The story was an opportunity to talk to her about another culture, teach her about the concepts of fables and oral traditions, and to just plainly entertain her.

This African folk tale captures the imagination of children of all ages. Anase the spider man uses his brains and wits to complete difficult tasks in order to release all of the world's stories, held by a powerful god. The story is timeless is exciting.

He co-founded the Stanford Research Institute remote viewing program--which was funded by the CIA--and was instrumental in tracking Soviet and Chinese weapon installations during the Cold War. And, he is a legally blind motorcyclist—who happens to be a Buddhist.

Rare Authenticity!

I have been a student and a contributor to the field of parapsychology for the last 35 years. And, it is with good authority that I highly recommend all of the books by Russell Targ -- for two simple reasons. First, Russell Targ is a very clear thinker. He expresses his thoughts easily and with great clarity (and wit!). Second, and I believe of even greater importance, Russell Targ is one of the most experienced and successful parapsychology researchers of the last fifty years. He writes from the perspective of an insider's insider. And, I regard all that he has to say to be of great importance to anyone trying to understand this very tricky field.

In addition -- and this is particularly relevant to Do You See What I See? -- Russell, himself, has been on a path of personal transformation. This book is especially lucid in terms of integrating modern, scientific ideas with thought from Hindu and Buddhist teachings.

Because it is autobiographical, this is the most wide-ranging of all of Targ's books. It is also the most personal. For anyone interested in the human story behind the career of a great parapsychology researcher (not to mention laser physicist), this book is a must read.

History of Remote Viewing Revealed (And Much More)

Even though I first met Russell Targ nearly three decades ago, and having been active in the field,there were still things to be learned. This book is full of details that will delight the reader. In addition to the historical perspective of remote viewing, Targ manages to provide a personal perspective about what brought him to the field, the family relationships that give depth, and an understanding of what it all means in a global, even spiritual, context. If you think you've heard it all before; well you haven't.

As the reader learns, Targ is a very complex man, one who has followed a multiplicity of trails. While he is legally blind and a self-confessed "Mr. Magoo,", he really does ride a motorcycle efficiently. Though best known for studying consciousness, he is also a laser physicist. Somewhat surprisingly, those, and many other aspects of his life, are adroitly intertwined in a way that makes sense, but only after the disparate pieces are assembled.

This is the latests of several books he has written. They are clear, concise, and complelling. Do You See What I See? is highly recommended for both consciousness aficionados and those novice-curious.

Reminiscences & Conclusions from a Life Being Well Observed

This Book:

The reference to Zelig in the book's description is apropos, and I was glad to find it wasn't marketing bull manure. There are lots of great stories here from a guy at the top of his game, and really nothing with which you could take issue. Targ's not selling any ideas here that you have to buy; the research and evidence from his career are presented in other publications.

For me, "Do You See What I See?" was a fabulous book with many surprises. Not the least of which were these two, paraphrasing from Targ's writing: 1.) You're not your business card or personal story, and 2.) he believes that our species has evolved as far as it's going to, and now our business is about consciousness. To have seen a man who used to be all about military RV write such a thing is cause for pause and reflection. Although Targ wasn't an enlisted man, the massive organizations for which he worked literally wear their jobs and ranks in full view on their sleeves.

There are also pleasant, personal anecdotes from Targ's earliest life, while he grew-up marinated in the environment of famous authors who worked with his publishing father. He drops thoughtful, funny and surprising one-liners with some regularity. Probably my favorite was, "Indeed, at this stage of my life, I am much more interested in questioning answers, than my previous specialty of answering questions." Having been afflicted with that attitude most of my life, his writing feels like that of a kindred soul.

The style of this book is rambling, through Targ's stream of awareness. Since eidetic memory isn't one of my skills, I'll go back and revisit the sections which spoke to me. This is obviously not a textbook so one shouldn't expect it read like one. There are many sections which I found touching or amusing, especially Chapter 14. If you'd enjoy "sitting by a master" and hearing them hold forth about real life experience, with real mistakes and triumphs, this would be a lovely read for you. Although I do get the feeling Targ would deflect the label "master."

My Introduction to Targ:

What interested me about Russell Targ's work is *who* he is, because that has informed and directed his now legendary work. Targ is one of the men who initiated the remote viewing (RV) programs for the U.S. military. The RV programs eventually led to colorful or dark fictions like those contained in the movies, The Men Who Stare at Goats or Suspect Zero. So this book has been my pleasant introduction to Targ's compendium of personal and professional experience. Happily but unexpectedly, I had found myself on a June Sunday standing next to Targ in a sparsely-populated conference hallway of an organization he co-founded, the International Remote Viewing Association. He and Paul Elder (Eyes of an Angel) were examining and photographing a drawing Paul made of an object Targ uses for RV.

I was interested in asking Targ a question about a project on which I'm working; to my pleasant surprise he invited me to sit with him at lunch. Targ was polite, direct and had droll humor in conversation. He even asked my opinion of one of IRVA's seemingly failed presenters. If you've co-founded the organization at which the presentation takes place, you're allowed that latitude. I hadn't seen the presentation, so I had the good fortune to answer that I couldn't have an opinion about it.

I asked Targ why he got into remote viewing and was simply interested in what intrigues him. In the years I've known one of Targ's beloved friends, Stephan A. Schwartz, I hadn't delved into Targ's now legendary work because I didn't always agree with the uses to which the work was put. So I intended this published bio to be my first look at what Targ thinks about himself and his work.

Never assign your students this, terrible scholarship.

If only I could give this book zero stars. The statistics are consistently biased, cherry-picked, manipulative or blatantly false. The analysis is often lacking or makes great leaps that are illogical. For an example, the author claims that in 2012 over 200 million people took the TOEIC exam. Impressive until one considers that the entire population of Japan in 2012 is around 120 million people, making the statistic blatantly impossible. In other chapters he includes decades old references and statistics despite there clearly being newer and more accurate studies to use. In the chapter on class equality he makes the claim that the 10% of people nationally that belong to the communist party acts as a form of proof that greater feelings of class inequality exist than statistics consistently indicate, even though party membership much more likely to be dependent upon other outside factors, primarily the socio-political history of the country. He then mentions the party membership statistics of Kyoto, simply because they are higher, even though they remain irrelevant for national income inequality since he just gave us the national statistics, demonstrating both a tendency to cherry-pick statistics and to use flawed or convenient logic to defend his points. All in all, I've never been more upset by a survey text designed for university students. There are much, much better texts out there, don't subject yourself or your students to this terrible piece of scholarship.

An up to date and accurate portrait of contemporary Japanese society

My public name - Foxy Foxworth - is a fun family name but I am a serious academic with a doctorate in Japanese studies and I lecture in the field. I recommend Sugimoto's monograph very highly and include it in my reading lists for students of Japanese studies. Sugimoto's macro-level thesis - that Japanese is society is, in fact, far more diverse than most studies would have us believe, is important and provides a much needed well rounded approach to a complex society. Sugimoto's portrait of Japan - a late capitalist, post-modern society - is balanced, accurate and enjoyable to read. His scholarship on class, gender, minority groups, education and civil society etc. is impeccable and his contribution to the field is significant, more so, precisely because he highlights those facets of Japanese society that either get overlooked or ignored. If you want a well-organised, well written, realistic and interesting depiction of contemporary Japanese society, then I recommend this book.

The books were new but the corners were a bit ripped on arrival. It would be better to put a bit extra padding for the corners I think. Otherwise everything was very good :)

This is a powerful personal story about changing mindsets and making major progress financially. This is an energetic read. I was hanging on every word. She provides actionable tips to charge (or recharge) your motivation to stick with a debt elimination plan and live debt free. Her examples are down to earth and she really makes debt freedom seem doable. This is a great read for anyone in need of motivation.

I'm not much for reading nonfiction, nor am I usually fond of military stories. I volunteered to review this book, because it was needed. I have to admit that I'm glad I did read it, because it warmed my heart.

I was Kevin Zimmerman's Commanding Officer when the I Corps Deputy Commanding General presented him with his SECOND Soldier's Medal for heroism. Kevin is an inspirational figure: I have never met a Christian with a purer faith. Kevin Zimmerman truly believed that God guided his feet over those minefields. Because he had true faith, he was able to do things others could not do, and to go places they feared to go. This is what true faith can do for a man. As such, it is truly an inspirational story, and one that should not be forgotten. And I know it to be true. I believe this book will lift your life.

Kevin, self-described, as far less than an angel makes not one but two walks through minefields to treat injured soldiers. There seems to be no hesitation in the medic's mind each time he lands to treat and remove soldiers blown to pieces in an area full of land mines. Read this book to get an actual on the ground account of war and the multiple miracles that allowed Kevin to assist his badly wounded compatriots.
