Java Modeling in Color with UML--printed in color--provides four UML "archetypes" for common entities in business modeling. These have rather abstract names like the moment-interval. Each archetype is assigned a different color in UML. The book uses these four archetypes to model 61 domain-specific business components for manufacturing (including suppliers and inventory control), facilities management, sales, employees, and organizations, plus accounting and document management.

Similar in spirit to software-design patterns, these UML components are catalogued with short prose descriptions and illustrated with UML. The detail here is often impressive, though the type is necessarily small. (Fortunately, the CD-ROM contains all these diagrams--including Java source code--for use within your own designs.) The authors--all experts in UML--have done the heavy lifting here. The idea is to incorporate these components within your own projects.

Besides a catalog of expert components, this book describes the authors' Feature-Driven Development (FDD) software-design process. (While there is one UML standard, design processes still proliferate.) FDD touts good productivity with a minimum of overhead. The authors argue that it can be used productively within today's ever-shorter business cycles.

Preface

Archetypes, color, and components will forever change how you build Java models. We build Java models with teams of developers. In our day-to-day mentoring, we develop and try out new ideas and innovations that will help those developers excel at modeling. Some of those ideas fall by the wayside. Some provide modest help. Others, according to our clients, are home runs. In this book, we reveal some of our home runs.

Chapter 1 explores the importance of color and introduces the color-coding that project teams have been applying with success around the globe. It also introduces the domain-neutral component, a template that youÕll see applied again and again in the chapters that follow.

Chapters 2Ð5 deliver ready-to-use Java models. These chapters present 61 domain-specific components, each one an interesting teaching by example. Use the components as they are, extend them with plug-ins, extend them by adding your own content, or use them as an outside opinion (comparing and contrasting with your own ongoing work).

Chapter 6 delivers a process that integrates Java modeling into the delivery of frequent, tangible, working results.

Don't Be Fooled

The people who trashed this book didn't do much with it, that's clear. When you first go to the book (or if you've seen Coad speak, as I did @ JavaOne), you will think that Mr. Rogers is trying to talk you into teaching you a new way to program w/crayons. I was also struck by the proliferation of classes that Coad advocates. However, I have returned to this book a number of times, in part because Coad's tool Together/J is now the preeminent Java/UML tool, it makes Rational look like a set of tinker toys. This last time, I've become quite enamored with what is going on in here. Here are my suggestions: 1. Really try and understand the DNC (domain neutral component). It is a very good approach to a kind of design completeness theorem that I haven't seen much talk about elsewhere. 2. Look at the diagrams. I look at them over and over again. After going a couple of rounds I found that I was becoming addicted to the visualization process, not merely as a representational apparatus, but as a way of actually doing more work/understanding the work I'd already done.
If you get the 30 day eval of Together/J and you work through understanding the DNC and color, you'll pass into another dimension from which you will not readily want to return. Plain white UML is dimensionless to me now.
All that said, I gave the book a 4 because it really needs an update. The FDD (feature driven development) methodology is not really interesting or appropriate anymore, I think. In the new massively interconnected, distributed component world, features are not what its about anymore, unless you're developing a word processor. Also, the archetypes are based on a non-EJB approach that will change if distributed computing is applied to it, quite significantly. Still this is an important book and combined w/TogetherSoft's tool it's perhaps the best design/UML teaching combo available. There aren't enough books out there that have models for real things in them. This does that and a lot more.

Not a book on Java and UML!

If you are looking for a book on Java and UML or a book that is about UML and uses Java examples; This IS NOT THE right book. The authors give you their way of patterns or archetypes that they call it. If you already know UML and what to see if there is other techniques or ways of extending UML this is the right book for you. Another thins about the colors, The idea is new but not a very good one. Often you tend to print you diagrams and show to other people. If you depend on their way of modeling you'll have to get a color printer and since there are text in the colored areas you'll need an expensive printer.

Ignore the Java

Though "Java" is in the title, this book is not limited to Java, and, indeed, there are no Java code examples. Usage of UML, however is extensive. The book presents an approach to generalizing business components (modelliing patterns - referred to as archetypes) that really helps one to understand the structure and interaction of business components. I use this book as a regular reference. It includes a near-complete business component model through 12 compound components.

Nice intro into becoming a minister's wife

I'm not married yet, but my boyfriend is in seminary and we will get married next year.
I wondered am I up to the challenge of being a ministers wife? Can I handle this? Can I support him whole heartedly?
This book is an excellent introduction into the life and responsibility a minister's wife will have. To hear Jeana Floyd's stories, opinions, and suggestions was so encouraging and I encourage other girlfriends of future preachers ;) or preacher wives that have been married for a short period time, to read this book. It is great! :)

Few will identify with the overall perspective. . .

When I read the overview of the book and the titles of the chapters, I was excited to read this book. And, as I began to read, I appreciated the engaging and personal way in which the book was written. Each chapter has some gems to ponder and consider. Further, the tone of the book is positive yet realistic. Floyd does not sugar-coat the challenges of the minister's wife; she approaches them realistically and with an abiding faith and trust in God.
However, the overall perspective of Floyd is one that few clergy wives living in 21st century America will identify with. The underlying assumptions of the writer speak of a bygone era in which the life of the pastor's wife revolved around her husband and the church, and much of the home life revolved around making life as perfect as possible in the home so the pastor could fulfilling his calling in the church.
Finally, as a Christian, looking at life as a balancing act, is not a paradigm modeled in the life of Jesus. Life is never "balanced." In fact, as ministers' wives, one of the main challenges is to learn to live under circumstances that are often off-balance. Planning and time management are not key, though they can be helpful. Instead, are we called to create healthy, holy rhythms so that we have the inner resources to lovingly and joyfully live with the daily imbalances of life, especially as ministers' wives?

Good book for new endodontists

This is a good book to buy before setting up an office, especially if you want to be able to practice like Gary Carr. I have learned from sad experience that it is very important to have things set up initially so that you can accomplish treatment with the minimum amount of wasted movement. The first chapters of the book discuss how to set up the office effectively and how to work effectively with an assistant. The later chapters discuss how to handle various clinical issues that come up. Most of the people who buy this book probably already know how to do a root canal, so they do not discuss the simple cases, but things that come up less frequently, but that we will all see once in a while. The tips are very useful.

Wonderful!!!

This book is based on a class that Gary and Dain did with a group of men. I found this book absolutely fascinating. Being raised primarily by my Dad I tend to think more like guys do but I still found a number of surprises in this book. Every woman should read it because it gives you some insights about who men are and be. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!

About the Author

David Julian McClements is a professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts. He specializes in the areas of food biopolymers and colloids, particularly the development of food-based structured delivery systems for bioactive components. Dr. McClements received his Ph.D. in Food Science (1989) from the University of Leeds. He then did post-doctoral research at the University of Leeds, University of California, Davis, and University College Cork. His research has been funded by grants from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the food industry. He is a member of the editorial boards of a number of journals, and has organized workshops, symposia, and conferences in the fields of food colloids, food emulsions, and delivery systems.

Well worth reading!

Reading this book, you get the feeling that you are sitting with a friend, sipping a cup of coffee, and talking about your path to success--a friend who is knowledgeable and genuinely cares. I read the book in one sitting and took copious notes. Brogan makes an important point at the outset: most people tend to think that "freaks" (those who march to the beat of their own drum) are generally young, but as the author points out, as they age, a lot of people grow comfortable with who they are and are not interested in "fitting in." So why wait to be old to do what you want to do? Why indeed! This book may well be a kick in the pants to get you started.

Brogan gives valuable, actionable advice for seasoned and budding entrepreneurs alike, including soloproneurs, small business owners, as well as employeeproneurs. Check out the 6 steps for building discipline, 10 things to quit, garbage and gold questions, and lists of awesomeness (or helpfulness) to name a few. I also appreciated that the advice is in short chapters, with bite sized nuggets, and bolded headings which makes it so much easier to read a book without having to wade through reams of detail. "Brevity is [indeed] the gold standard in business" as Brogan says.

I loved the concept of Monchu, an Okinawan word meaning one family, "the family you choose." Brogan explains how this is better than just networking; this is a list of people you care about. Monchu is the extended network you nurture. The mind-set of Monchu is that you care more about some people than as merely customers or a part of your network. It's the idea that you're not just looking to make money and "sell and run" but that you might want to build a community beyond just selling. If this book inspires you to work from a Monchu mind-set, you will be richer for reading it. Not to mention all of the other useful advice.

Welcome by fellow weirdos and freaks

I am a Chris Brogan fan. His daily writing seems to talk directly to me. In his new book, "The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth", he writes a manifesto of entrepreneurship for the rest of us. It includes:

Admit you are a freak. Do business on your terms. Follow your passion.
Define success for yourself.For me, it's being able to support my family at something I love doing.
Learn a new skill. Take joy in improving your weaknesses.
Have a disciplined routine to be productive. This is necessary in always on, 24/7 culture.
Fall in love with not knowing. This is what having your own business is definitely all about.
Look forward to obstacles. There is satisfaction in overcoming them.

As I read through the book, I kept saying, yes and yes. Chris knows who you are and knows how to help!

This is the Missing Link

I've read my fair share of business books over the past few months, but this one stands out: it isn't the same old song-and-dance. It doesn't simply repeat the "just be authentic, be yourself" advice that can be fairly easily found many places now. Nor does it just give you the nuts-and-bolts to making a business happen and extol the benefits of, for example, choosing yourself or starting your own online business.

Brogan's key insight is to link the two discussions. Choosing to do business on your own terms is an integral part of being a "freak" and owning it. The two shift together, and choices made on one axis affect the other.

Brogan's second key insight--which I dearly wish more folks would talk about as systematically--is that "business is about belonging."

This insight has revolutionized the way I think about doing business. It used to be a slightly sordid thing that would need to exist as a necessary evil. But in making his statement and working through the implications, he persuaded me that there is much more to business than just the gross.

And that observation makes all the difference in the world. If larger corporations (I'm looking at you, U_____ Airlines and U_____ P_____ Service) actually paid attention and began to focus on their customer as the foundation, I don't think commerce (air travel, overnight delivery) would ever be the same. If smaller businesses began to pay attention to this principle, though, the world would be a manifestly better place.

And what better compliment can be paid to a book than to say that the world would be a better place if more people would read it and act on the thoughts in it?
