The contributors argue that while serious harm is often caused by transnational criminal activity - for example, trafficking in human beings - the construction of that criminal activity as an external threat obscures the origins of these crimes in the markets for illicit goods and services within the 'threatened' societies. As such, the authors question the extent to which global crime can be controlled through law enforcement initiatives and alternative policy initiatives are considered. The authors also question whether transnational organised crime will retain its place on the policy agendas of the United Nations and European Union in the wake of the 'war on terror'.

This is a poorly written and organized book. You could learn more from wikipedia. It makes frequent reference to Buddhist texts with obscure sanskrit or pali titles, without explanation to what those texts are or why they are important. We don't know who follows those texts and who does not. This book gives you little concrete information to base your understanding Buddhism off of and is mostly vague stories and vaguely substantiated claims. The organization is haphazard and opaque. I was very frustrated studying this as a college text and don't feel I learned much.

About the Author

Peter M. McGinnis, PhD, is a professor in the department of exercise science and sport studies at the State University of New York, College at Cortland, where he has taught since 1990. Before 1990, Dr. McGinnis was an assistant professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Northern Colorado. During that time he served as a sport biomechanist in the Sports Science Division of the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, where he conducted applied sport biomechanics research, tested athletes, taught biomechanics courses to coaches, and developed educational materials for coaches.

Dr. McGinnis is also a biomechanist for the pole vault event for USA Track and Field. As a member of the American Society of Testing Materials, he serves as chair of a task group on pole vault helmets and secretary of a pole vault equipment subcommittee. He has authored numerous articles and technical reports about the biomechanics of pole vaulting, and has been a reviewer for Sports Biomechanics, the Journal of Applied Biomechanics, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and the Journal of Sports Sciences.

Dr. McGinnis is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine; American Society of Biomechanics; and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He received a PhD in physical education from the University of Illinois in 1984 and a BS in engineering from Swarthmore College in 1976.

a great help

This class, Biomechanics, was the hardest class I took in college, yet somehow ended-up being my favorite. The professor was really cool,and always helpful, which I really appreciated. I sold this wonderful textbook at the end of the class, but I wish I hadn't. I highly recommend this book by Peter McGinnis. In fact, I'd like to meet him sometime!

All the prayers from day 1 until the last day of the year are indeed great prayers. However, we have to do the prayers with utmost sincerity, thoughtfulness and faith. Great Word by Word Picture Dictionary!

I teach an ESL class to immigrants and use this book constantly. My students like this book becuz of the pictures, conversation ideas at the bottom and translations in several languages. I've had to order books (in Spanish, Chinese, Korean) for my students who want their own copies. We love this book!

"Despite a close, long-standing affiliation with humans, the domesticated cat remains an essential predator. The principal key to understanding the cat's behavioral repertoire is recognition of the fact that most of it derives from the cat's ancestral roots as a solitary hunter. The authors discuss behavior in the context of underlying neutral and sensory physiology. They also address developmental aspects of behavior, including socialization and the influence of kitten playfulness on subsequent adult behavior. The book briefly considers select behavioral problems in relation to disease states and to the complex social systems of cats. The latter, while typically appearing in multi-cat households, are often not appreciated by pet owners. This well-written, interesting book provides a great deal of information about the underlying mechanisms of behavior in domestic cats. About the Author
John W. S. Bradshaw is a Visiting Fellow and Director of the Anthrozoology Institute at the University of Bristol, where he was formerly Reader in Companion Animal Behavior and University Research Theme Leader for Animal Welfare & Behavior. His main research interests are in the behavior and welfare of domestic cats and dogs, and their relationships with people; he has published over 100 research papers and book chapters on these topics. Since 2009 he has focused his attention on the dissemination of animal welfare science to pet owners: his book Dog Sense/In Defence of Dogs was a non-fiction bestseller in both the UK and USA in 2011, and has been translated into nine other languages. He was one of the founders of the International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), and has been a member of the Council of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) and set up its Accreditation Committee (1999-present).

This is a must read for cat nerds...

I have loved cats since, at age three of four my mother humored me and took in a stray orange cat that I named Meow Meow. I had a recent catless period of several years that ends this Saturday, when i will be adopting a beautiful blue point traditional Siamese kitten. nonetheless, I haven't had a cat for several years, and was feeling a bit out date on my knowledge.

My reaction to that feeling of insufficient knowledge has been to devour a number of books about cats. of all the books, this one stands out well above the rest in terms of the quality, depth and breadth of information. It reads like a good college psychology textbook, except that it is the psychology of cats, not humans.

If you're a cat nerd, work with cats, or are just looking for a book that is packed full of information on cats and don't mind giving your grey matter a bit of a workout, this is, IMO *THE* book to read. Once you finish, you'll be familiar with the latest theories on feline behavior, and the results of numerous cat studies.

Pros:
-lots of wonderful information
-not dumbed down
-includes academic references and charts to help you put the information in perspective.

Cons:
-expensive
-*not* light reading.
-it is printed in a pretty small font
