About the Author
M. E. Maki is a writer, editor and genealogist. Her genealogy research has been published in Connecticut Ancestry and The Nutmegger, a publication of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists. She writes a genealogy blog, Growing Up in Willow Creek, and produces family history monographs. This is her first novel. Mary grew up in Upstate New York, where this story is set, and now lives in Virginia with her husband, Ray. A very interesting mystery!

Caitlyn is a graphic designer with a successful business in Washington, DC, but she travels to a small town in the Catskills when her cousin Todd is murdered. Todd is a nice high school boy, popular and a good athlete with an interest in the environment. Caitlyn wants to help with the investigation, especially after she meets Ethan, the Sheriff. She has a boyfriend, but it doesn't seem very serious and part of the book explores her deciding on their relationship. Ethan has his own entanglements that no one suspects.
Together they investigate Todd's murder which becomes increasingly complicated with all sorts of environment issues such as fracking and a plethora of suspects. I don't want to give too much away, but this is a rip-snorting ride of a mystery with a lot of twists before it is solved. I especially liked the neighbor farming family who came from the South and are mixed up with herbal folklore, but there are a lot of great characters. I hope to meet them all again in the next book.
I heartily recommend this book and enjoyed it immensely.

Informative mystery novel acknowledging and addressing current ecological and health issues.

This is a great murder mystery that you don't want to put down as you try to anticipate the outcome. As a former resident of the upstate NY area, there were familiar areas described as Ms. Maki intertwines ecological conflicts and health issues in her characters. The human and canine characters are very realistic as she delicately describes their actions. Besides the educational aspect of fracking and "Munchausen's by Proxy" disease, there is romance, suspense, and the human emotion after someone you love has passed. She meshes all these things together resulting in an outstanding novel. I am looking forward to the next phase, answering some hanging questions about the main character, Caitlyn Jamison.

Anyone who has been to the Finger Lakes Region of New York State knows this is a beautiful backdrop for this mystery story, wrapped within another story, that of a very troubled woman and her family. Important social issues involving fracking and water contamination flesh out this book, making the "mystery" take, if not a back seat, at least not the driver's seat! This is a good read, and as Ms. Maki's first novel, a great start! All of the characters are interesting and multi-faceted; very "real" people. Caitlin Jamison, the novel's main character, is realistic and believable. I look forward to more Caitlin Jamison mysteries, and more books by Mary Maki!
