A voice for every character, and every character in its voice.

Bendis has a remarkable ability to write for so many different voices that it seems insane to me. An oral history of the Avengers seems completely up his alley, and I applaud his ability to craft such involved and engaging explanations for previous storylines that carried with them the over-the-top cheese that was so common with superhero books in those days. It adds a level of breadth to a comic book that is already massive. As the "Avengers" film hits theaters and uninitiated fans venture for the first time into the graphic territory of Cap, Iron Man, and many others, I find it comforting to know that there are books like these that provide an interesting take on the history of Earth's mightiest super-team.
My only complaint is that the book was so short. Why not take a little more time to fill in even more of the gaps? I would have loved to have a book like this that starts from the beginning, and brings you up to speed with the creation of the New Avengers. Perhaps a Bendis-centric way to look at the Avengers universe, but I have been nothing but thrilled with what he's done thus far.

A little to much artistic license here.

My main problem with this book, which I hoped would be a fairly accurate accounting of their history, lies in Bendis's ability to play fast and loose with established history.
A couple of examples of this would be the assertion that the Yellowjacket/Janet Van Dyne wedding was an elaborate ruse to avoid the press rather than Yellowjacket suffering from delusions at the time. The tone that the other characters had toward Pym also contradicts the acceptance and camaraderie that they expressed when he encountered.
Bendis also misses the point when portraying the Avengers as still being distrusting of the Swordsman, even after his sacrifice to save Mantis from Kang (and the use of Hawkeye to illustrate that distrust, even though they were together in the Avengers for only one issue, seems contrived).
Bendis does a nice job in many instances in taking a fresh perspective on events to provide an reasonable explanation for some of the odder events in early Avengers history, but his insistence on attaching personality conflicts where there was never any indication of friction over the years seem a bit tacked-on and doesn't quite work.

tv confessional history of the Avengers

This amazing non-comic covers 15+ events in Avengers history. While a new reader to the Avengers might enjoy it, it is clearly meant for the hardcore Avenger fan whose knowledge spans events from the 60's to the very early 80's.
It reads like a series of tv confessionals where the Avengers describe what happened in those events. Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Henry Pym and the Wasp are the principal characters, although Reed Richards (who Bendis writes better than anyone else every has) also makes a few key appearances.
I gave a copy to a very good friend of mine who also adores the history of the Marvel Universe and he loved it. It's great.
